By now you might think that I would be past the chair covers and on to ‘Beginners Sewing Project #3’. But between the hurricane (class cancelled for two weeks) and the fact that I never really look at the sewing between classes, I am way behind.
But, I have to say, I’ve made some headway this week. Went to class on Monday and Wednesday and even did some ‘homework’ in between on Tuesday. So far I have been able to create the pattern using instructions I found online (I knew that giant news print sketch pad from design school would come in handy one day!) and, with my instructors hand holding help, have started a test cover out of muslin. Here are a few images of this week’s progress.
There are only a few weeks left in the class. So I guess I will be signing up for the next one if I am ever to complete these covers…

So very cool! I’ve always wanted to be able to sew useful things like a chair cover! One day, I do want to be able to reupholster an antique chair. Even if I have to take a class and have the professor hold me hand through it too, I will reupholster a chair one day!

Way to go! Keep on sewing!
Again you did not choose the easiest fabric 🙂
How many chairs do you have?
homestilo says
Only two- and even that seems daunting right now.

Wow, I am impressed, patterns and muslin! You are learning so much. Can’t wait to see how the chairs turn out!

Not bad! That’s some impressive progress for a “beginner.” Is that an IKEA chair? I think I have the same one, but with white legs. They’re surprisingly comfortable! Good luck with the rest of the sewing!
homestilo says
Yes! It’s the “Henry” chair!

That’s awesome! I can’t wait to see the finished product.

Yay for making a pattern! Next time I need some sewing help I know where to find you 😉 Can’t wait to see the finished chair(s)!

I’m really impressed that you’re making chair covers. I have similar chairs that need covering (mine has arms though), and I’ve been meaning to find a vendor to make covers for me. I never thought to learn how to do it on my own. I want mine to be removable so that I can wash them. I’ll be really interested to see your progress and how these turn out. Good luck, Santa!

I am so impressed – I have been sewing since I was 7, and have been a Home Ec teacher for years – you are doing a great job. Keep at it, the end result really gives you a sense of satisfaction!
homestilo says
That’s what I am hoping for Cyndi- thanks for the encouragement!

The pattern is the hardest part! Once you have the first one done the next one will be so much easier.
