A Visit To Salamanca, Spain

Now that I’ve got you thinking that the only thing worth seeing in Salamanca is the Zara Store, I am leaving you this week with a look at some other attractions from this lovely city.

When first arriving in this city, you are met with an impressive site.  The cathedral of Salamanca has two parts. The old, built in the 12th century and the new, built in the 16th century.  In a word, it is massive (and absolutely beautiful of course).


This is considered the oldest among existing Spanish universities. How old? Lecturers have included one Christopher Columbus on his ‘discoveries’. Like the cathedral, the intricate stone carvings on the facade are impressive. One of the (tourist) attractions involves finding a famous frog that sits on a skull among all of the carved detail. And wouldn’t you know it, I found it this time! Still awaiting my prize…

 

Plaza de San Martin, Salamanca

The Plaza Mayor (main square) is the heart of every Spanish city.  Even smaller towns have a Plaza Mayor. The one in Salamanca is quite spacious. It was built in the 18th century in the Baroque style. There you can find shops, cafes and locals enjoying it all.

 

So there you have it. A very condensed visit to Salamanca.  It is a city rich in antiquities and history and, in my opinion, definitely worth a visit.

  6. What a beautiful city, I would love to go there one day. New Zealand (where I live) is such a young country, I’m always fascinated by the history & architecture in these European cities. xxx
