Some of the things I cherish the most have been given to me by loved ones. Like my cake server, for example. It was given to us as a wedding gift by my fabulous cousin Gina who happens to live in Copenhagen (where she has inadvertently developed an appreciation for the Scandinavian design greats!)
The server is designed by Arne Jacobsen. The Danish architect/industrial designer is well known for some of his iconic chair designs, like The Swan and The Ant. But Jacobsen also designed a line of cutlery for the Danish brand Georg Jensen. The line includes this pie server, aptly named “Congratulations”.
The story goes that Jacobsen was quite fond of layer cake and decided to design a combined cake knife and server. It is almost hard to believe that such a sleek piece was actually designed in 1957.
