Beach houses in New Zealand are referred to as ‘baches’- short for bachelor pad, although they often accommodate families. These houses are known for being casual and modest with a “back to basics” type of feel.
Architect Gerald Parsonson and his wife, Kate, set out to build their beachfront house in the style of a traditional bach. The house had to be laid back and low key. The result was a 1670 sq ft / 155 sq m home made up of a collection of small buildings.
Located in the town of Paraparaumu, on the south west side of the North Island of New Zealand, the climate is mild enough that the family can make use of the house all year long. During the Summer months, Parsonson makes the two hour commute in and out of the city for work, while the rest of the family stays at the house.
So, enjoy and have a great weekend!

Oh yes, that is so Kiwi – love it! We are just packing up to go to our family bach for the w/end, although ours is next to the lake, not the beach. Have a wonderful w/end. xxx
