Hello and Happy Friday.
As you already know, I signed up for an upholstery class via a local “Adult School”. My original plan was to bring in a dining chair thinking, if I can learn how to do one, I can go back and complete the rest of the set. But then when I got to class, I found that the format was not so much ‘sit and take notes’ as it was ‘here’s some tools, get to it!’ As a result, I was able to complete all six chairs throughout the 8 week session. Leaving my mother, who unknowingly volunteered her chairs while on an extended trip out of town, shocked happily surprised.
Cost and Savings
- Class: $120
- Materials: fabric $40 (yes- I got a mega bargain on this fabric)
- Approximate time spent: 25 hours total (in and out of class)
At $50/hour (minimum for local upholstery shop), the project would have cost about $1250. After cost and materials, the savings are still at $1090. Besides the savings, it was just fun to get out there and do something so hands on.
…and voila! (8 weeks later)
For the head chairs, I used a linen looking fabric in a neutral color. For the side chairs, I went with a tonal stripe again. But this time, instead of the dreaded original pink, I went with a fabric that complemented the fabric of the head chairs and also picked up on paint color of the chairs.

Wow these look great! I’ve always wanted to learn how to upholster furniture. We have an old couch that badly needs a touch up.

Those look so nice! You can’t tell they were your first projects they are so well done. I almost took an upholstery class but wasn’t sure I wanted to. Seeing what you were able to accomplish makes me rethink things though.
