*Modern Art = I Could Do That + Yeah, But You Didn’t
When I first saw this quote, I just had to laugh. I could totally relate and not just in terms of “modern” art. If only I had a dollar for every time I saw something and thought “I could so do that” or told a friend “Oh you could so do that” then, went home and did nothing…Let’s just say I could have bought a lot of art by now.
A while back (ok, over a year ago), I saw some art I thought I could create. What I liked about these pieces (*and you’ll have to forgive me because at the time, I did not think to note the artist’s name), was the contrast between a sweet floral background and a more contemporary image on top. And, for a change, I actually went home and tried it out (ok, over a year later).
Steps:
1. invert the original image into black & white – I used Power Point to do this and then saved the image as a jpg.
2. print image – I blew it up and printed it on an 11×17 sheet of paper
3. trace image onto fabric- I did this by turning my dining table into a giant light box by placing a task lamp beneath the glass and taping the image printout to the glass
4. steam the fabric to get rid of any wrinkles that might have occurred while you were procrastinating in between steps
5. staple fabric to canvas
6. paint in your tracing – I used several different brushes depending on the size of the space that needed filling in
I only had to buy the canvas, fabric and paint as I had all the other necessary materials. I bought a yard of fabric and had plenty left over. I also bought 2 small pots of the acrylic paint and only ended up using ½ of one. But at .80¢ for each small bottle, not a big deal.

Will your talents ever cease! So clever. My hubby uses that quote a lot, and I laughed when I saw my friend had bought a framed print with those words – I should get one for us. xxx

I love that! The fabric and the painting are great! I hope you had fun doing it. It sounds like you are on my schedule for actually completing things, though. 🙂

Great quote! I’ve said it numerous times at the museum or in galleries that I could do something like that and my husband always points out that I didn’t 😉
Love your diy project! It looks great. Did you hang it already?

That is so ridiculously cool. I had to reread the post just to make sure that you really did it yourself. SO awesome.

This is really awesome – and what a well executed DIY. I’m pretty sure none of my DIYs ever turn out this way

It looks AMAZING Santa! Great job! Oh, my DIY ‘to-do’ folder (I started it about 2 years ago) is very thick. Though, spring time always motivate me to brush up on my DIY skills 🙂

Awww- thanks for all the support! I just knew that the “Modern Art Is” quote would resonate with a lot of us. So up next, may try to take on a remake of the Hirst Dot paintings. I promise not to take over a year for that one.
@Nina- haven’t hung it up yet, but I have just the place…

The painting looks awesome. I wouldn’t have thought to use the back side of the fabric, very clever.
