Hello and Happy Friday.
I am leaving you for the week with the awesome Nina. Her blog, living in 40, usually features a look at the transformation of her beautiful home Northern New Jersey.
Hello, I’m Nina from living in 40 and Santa let me take over her blog today to share one of my DIY projects with you. Hope you enjoy it!
We have a small entry vestibule right when you enter our house. One of the first things I changed in there, before starting to paint the ceiling and walls, was the light fixture. The old light fixture was not really our style and I have heard people refer to similar fixtures as boob lights. I didn’t want a giant boob in my entry way…
What you’ll need:
- a ceiling medallion
- a porcelain lamp holder
- spray paint in desired color
- Edison bulb
All in all it was a pretty easy and quick project. Here is the step by step:
- Drill 3 small holes into the medallion.
- Prime and paint the ceiling medallion before installing. I used spray primer I had on hand and the paint I wanted to use for the ceiling.
- I glued the medallion onto the ceiling with liquid nails and used three small screws to hold it in place until the glue was dry.
- After taking out the screws fill holes with paintable caulk and caulk once around the edge of the medallion where it meets the ceiling to make it look seamless.
- The next day I painted the ceiling and touched up the areas of the medallion with the patched holes.
- Spray paint lamp holder in the desired color at any time during the process. To keep the thread of the lamp holder clean I screwed in an old light bulb while spray painting it. Install lamp holder once ceiling is dry.

Nina, you freaking crack me up. Boob lighting?!

That’s the actual term! Hilarious, isn’t it?

Everything Nina touches turns to DIY gold, I swear. That light fixture looks incredible. We were plagued with boob lights in our place, too! I don’t know why builders keep installing them, they are so hideous. This is a stylish fix. Love Edison light bulbs.
Hope you are enjoying your vacation!

Hi Nina, you really made me laugh with the ‘boob light’ – hahaha! Great DIY tip too, the result’s fab! A lovely weekend to you and Santa!

Nina you really did an excellent job at taking a traditional element like the ornate medallion and updating it!

Oh no! You never want a boob light! That would look really great with a silver tipped bulb as well.

That’s exactly the lighting I have right now in my entrance! ‘boob’ light. I hate that thing so much but i haven’t had time to get something new…I have found some inspiration.

Nina, I never knew those types of lights were called “boob lights.” I learned something new! Yes, I agree, your diy light is much better than the boob fixture with that beautiful, ornate ceiling medallion and Edison light bulb. Great job, Nina!

Who wants boob lights anyway? 🙂 I love this project – would be slightly nervous trying something electrical (because I can be a bit of a DIY disaster) but I guess you have got to start somewhere!
Nina says
Thank you all for the warm welcome! 🙂 Santa thanks again for having me! Hope you still enjoy your vacation, can’t wait to leave for mine 😉
Meghan, I’m not good with electrical either, always afraid to get an electrical shock. That’s why I always make sure to shut off the electricity to the whole house if I have to install a light fixture…
