Today a roundup of some sugar skull themed home accessories.
The day of the dead, or Dia De Lost Muertos is a very special day in Mexico. It is a day when families await the return of the spirits of loved one who have passed on. For this day, they set up altars where they place sweets and drink to please the spirits. The sugar skull is a very symbolic part of this.
The sugar skull originated in Mexican churches as a way to honor the departed with skulls made of sugar rather than more expensive materials. The names of the deceased are/were placed on the forehead of the skulls. The object would then be placed either at home or on a gravestone to praise that spirit’s return (on the Day Of The Dead). It is a labor intensive endeavor involving detail and skill.
Today, many are attracted to these cheerful and folk inspired figures. And for those who are, you don’t have to travel as far as Mexico to find pieces for the home that feature the sugar skull.
Feliz Dia De Los Muertos!
