While in Mumbai, we got to visit a building that had briefly served as a home for spiritual leader Mohandas ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi. It is now operating as a museum, but one could just imagine what life must have been like in the space.
Having spent over two decades of his life in South Africa, it is no surprise that there would be a few homes there that had once been occupied by the Mahatma and are now open to the public.
One such place is Satyagraha House, a bungalow in a suburb of Johannesburg that has been given a new lease on life as a guest house.
above: Guest rooms have been designed keeping in mind Gandhi’s austerity, resulting in contemplative spaces.
below: The minimal design of the guest house continues onto the common spaces like the dining area- where guests can enjoy a strictly vegetarian menu.

There’s a nice sense of serenity to the minimalist design which I guesss was sort of the point.
Thanks for sharing!

Wow, that would be a very neat experience to stay there – just the karma alone would be zen!! ;-0

The asceticim gives the place such calmness. Everything looks so functional, this is the same reason why I sometimes enjoy shaker style a lot.

Oh, this place looks exactly like a space where I could relax and unwind, read books and contemplate live. I really like how the dining area opens up to the courtyard, it makes it so homey even though everything is very minimalistic.

What a peaceful and wonderful group of spaces. Maybe it’s the way the rooms have been styled to reflect his memory and practices, but I can definitely feel how calm and restful it would be to spend time there. Really lovely.

I could read and reflect very happily there. Imagine tea at that table open to the courtyard! Great post.

How serene it looks (and surely feels). Thanks so much for finding/sharing these pics. I just watch the biographical film Gandhi from 1983(I think) last week for the 1st time (learned alot about him and human kindness and love).

Gosh, it’s lovely. Black and white with dashes of natural wood definitely makes for a sophisticated look. The minimalism helps the achieve a calm and serene environment. I want my house to look like these spaces.
