Hello There.
I was looking over the blog archives to see what posts I have published in the past in regards to St Patrick’s Day. They were all tied to having the color green in the home. So I am going with something a little different this year with a post about growing shamrocks at home.
The perennial Oxalis plant, as it is also known, looks similar to the four leaf clover that is so popular with all things Irish. For this reason, they too have become popular around St. Patrick’s Day. They will bloom in the Spring and Summer with different colored flowers depending on the species. They can be planted outdoors, but beware because they tend to takeover. If planting indoors, they are not difficult to take care of- making them even more attractive (wink wink).
Plant Care
Light: full sun preferred; indirect light
Water: allow soil to dry in between watering
Fertilization: every two weeks during blooming seasons
Best Temperatures: 60-70 degrees during the day , 55-65 degrees at night
Propagation: the shamrock is a bulb plant. separate bulbs and replant
Fun Facts
- Originates in Mexico
- There are at least 900 different species of the Oxalis known
- In large quantities, the plant can be toxic. In small quantities, it can have medicinal uses
