It must have been love at first sight for owner and landscape designer Todd R Cole, when he first saw this place. It’s in a floodplain, a landslide area, fire zone, and it sits on top of an active earthquake fault! But, none of these things deterred Cole from deciding to make this old power plant in Sonoma, California home. And he wasn’t the first either. Fifty years prior, someone else had made this home (dubbed The Power House). Still, at the time of Cole’s purchase, some important amenities were still missing ie. central heating and a kitchen, anyone?
The plant operations room became the living room and the previous owner’s midcentury addition was painted to house a cozy bedroom. Cole then used his love of flea markets for furnishing and accessorizing this most unusual home.

I would honestly take any home in Sonoma! But this one definitely has charm. Flea market finds are the best! I adore all of the open windows in this house – especially in the bedroom. It would be a dream to wake up to that every morning.

I love the outside more than the inside I think! I love the text treatment on the “No Admittance: Danger” painted on the wall by the front door. And that fountain out back! But I couldn’t live in a place with so many threats of natural disaster, haha.

i love converted homes; industrial, old churches, school houses . . . if i could buy any house, the history of it would definitely be a huge selling feature for me – because if i could buy any house, i would have the money for all the renovations too, right ; )

I always find it so interesting and cool when people take an old factory or warehouse building and repurpose it as a home. The owner is guaranteed to have lots of unique architectural details that one wouldn’t find in a traditional home. The one you show above is a wonderful example. Oh, and to live in Sonoma!

I love that this house isn’t a typical house. That is my favorite thing about it. And the throw you selected looks so cozy. 🙂

I’m intrigued with creating living spaces in unique buildings…. I love how they carve cosy environments out of those vast spaces. Very creative. Thanks for the post!

It really is something special, isn’t it? I just love the whole open plan feel of every space but the exterior areas are just absolutely stunning!

What caught my eye is the narrow long window close to the ceiling on the bedroom. Love that!
