Architect Kieran Gaffney and his wife (and business partner) Makiko Konishi of Konishi Gaffney Architects, looked to their time spent in Japan for the interior inspiration of their Edinburgh house. Fashioned after a Japanese country home, the interior is clean and simple.
Because it is built in a historical zone, most of the materials and shapes used on the exterior are not unlike those found in the rest of the neighbourhood. However, they did sneak in one or two Japanese touches. For example, the char wood treatment of the front door. This is a technique often used in Japan for fire proofing wood.

The Japanese influence is very clear in this space — I think it is super cool that it is in Edinburgh, must be very unique especially for the area!

Oooo A tatami room! I used to love going to Japanese restaurants with those rooms, they’re so gorgeous and clean, just refreshing! This is very unique home no matter where it is located!

Gorgeous, I love the Japanese influence. A Scottish & Japanese union – how cool. Our friends are Scottish & African, at the wedding all the men wore kilts and all the women had their hair braided – a beautiful blend! xxx
