In lieu of Cinco de Mayo, today’s house tour is of a modern home in Mexico City.
If you look up images Mexican design or decor, you are almost certain to be bombarded with bursts of bright colors, Otomi prints, and the feeling that you are one piñata away from a major fiesta. All of which I love, don’t get me wrong. It is a testament to how rich and festive Mexico can be. But there is another side to Mexican culture. One that is elegant and understated. I set it to find this via design and architecture. And Eureka!
The main of objective of the architectural firm DCPP Arquitectos was to make the surrounding green grounds the focal point of this structure. They did this by building smack in the middle of the garden. Then they made sure that both sides of the open concept space opened to the outside. When open, the outdoor seating and dining areas become one with the interior areas.
The bedrooms also feature glass walls that slide open to the outdoors. But my favorite detail (see below) is how the herringbone floor is mimicked with the pavers outside.
Que Viva Mexico!
