reversible tote bag kit from studio urbana
One thing I learned from taking the upholstery class was that sewing plays a role (really, it was more of a nasty surprise at the time, but we can now call it a “lesson learned”). With this in mind, and since I have already acquired my next upholstery project, I have decided to sign up for a beginner’s sewing class, which starts tonight.
I was a little hesitant at first, as the class required that we bring our own machine. But, with little brother’s birthday giftcard from IKEA, I went and got their SY machine. I know, not exactly heavy duty machinery. But I figured, it’ll get the job done for simple projects and, if I ever go pro, I can make a bigger investment at a later time.
Another requirement is that we bring in a project and I’ve found some around the web that I think would be easy enough for a beginner like me.

There is something so pretty about ruffled curtains. And I suppose this project could be applied for regular window treatments as well- and not just shower curtains.

I actually think that this is what I am going to start out with. Our two head dining chairs could use a little dressing up.

Ok, ok. Truth be told, this may be a little advanced for me and my Sy. But, who knows, maybe with a little bit of practice…

Good lord, and just when I think IKEA can’t out-do themselves, they go and make a sewing machine. I love sewing, or I used to, when I did it. I’ve made a few cushions and seat covers in my day, but the sewing machine is now firmly planted in my mom’s closet, so it’s been a while. This might be the motivation I need to get back into it!

I am sooo impressed you’ve signed up. I think I’ve been meaning to sign up for eh hem, several years now. Please, please show us some pics of your projects. Oh and if you get the chance to whip up one of those ruffled white shower curtain to send my way…..! π

Ha! I don’t think I’m ready to start taking orders yet Niki, but will keep you in mind when I become a sewing wiz π

Despite your rough time in the upholstery class, I actually think you will like sewing a lot. There are some really annoying things about it but it’s fun to be able to make whatever you want.
I’m great with home things – pillows, drapery, bench covers of all sorts but I really want to take a tailoring class for clothing so I can alter my own things.

I think you’d do a great job with any of these DIY projects. I love the ruffle shower curtain and also the circle designed felt pillow.

Good on you! I think that’s what has put me off trying upholstery… I’m terrible at sewing! Can’t wait to see what you create. x

I have been dying to take an upholstery course for years now… just been a bit hesitant to give up part of my Saturday (was it worth it for you)? Also, the Sy sewing machine is on my Christmas list this year (very glamorous I know) so I would love a review? I can’t wait to see your future projects!

Good for you! Sewing is fun! Only advise I have is that choose something you really want to finish. No matter if it’s a bit more tricky but if you really want to see the end result you will have the motivation to finish it. Also you will be proud of the thing you did and can admire it for a long time. If you do something not very meaningful you’ll just want to throw it in the trash once it’s finished.

Thanks for the advise Leena!

Hope you had fun with your sewing class. Need to take one as well, wanted to practice my sewing before starting my new upholstery class but didn’t do it. But now I can ask you for advice π

Wow good for you! My mother knows how to sew and it’s quite pathetic that I don’t. You’re going to be a whiz before you know it and cranking out beautiful textiles soon.

Whaaaaa? Ikea sells sewing machine??? (where have I been!). One thing I learned about sewing …. lots of discipline involved (hence not for me, haha). Though I still have a list of things I need to sew (ummm, or bring over to tailor to have it done). I hope you had a BLAST!!!

I just purchased a new sewing machine & can’t wait to get back from vacation to start using it! I did teach my twin granddaughters to make super simple skirts (one seam up the back, hem and casing for elastic waistband). The tote-bag will be easy as well. Good luck & can’t wait to see what you make!

Thanks for the votes of confidence everyone! The first class involved a lot of talking (so that was definitely my speed) and the instructor seems fascinated by my IKEA machine

That shower curtain is killer! I had no idea Ikea sold sewing machines; interested in hearing you like it.
Hopefully your sewing projects will make me motivated to start my own!
