It started off as a lovely weekend: anniversary dinner on Friday, dinner and and a movie with friends on Saturday. But, by Sunday, we were on hurricane alert all day. To make matters more bizarre, it’s the second hurricane here in the northeast in 14 months.
Now, I know that we are in the middle of Fall here, and I don’t normally start my weeks motivated by natural disasters… but I can’t help it. When I think of hurricanes, I think of tropical homes with some very specific attributes.
Attributes which, by the way, our home does not have. So, it feels like we are getting the tropical weather without the benefits of the tropical setting.

I love that the mosquito nesting is a must! I live in Florida and there are so many times I’m out on the porch just wishing for some!

Outdoor showers freak me out. Big time! Haha, but I love mosquito netting (without the mosquitos, of course) and all those floor to ceiling windows. I hope you guys stay dry and safe up there! It’s already been raining in Philly for over 12 hours and it hasn’t even made landfall yet. Yikes.

I’m such a big fan of tropical homes – maybe it’s just because it reminds me of vacation though. That can’t be a bad thing, can it?

The top photo reminds me of Fripp Island, SC where we used to vacation. All the houses were built up like that for storms. It’s something I never ever see here in Portland, it makes me miss it there!

Note to self: add Fripp Island, SC to the list…

I think it’s great that Hurricane Sandy makes you think of this beautiful tropical home. Way to turn lemons into lemonade. 🙂
Be safe during the storm. Wishing you all the best.

Absolutely love the porches on tropical homes! I am with Theresa it’s great that you can turn lemons into lemonade this way. My highlight will be not to have to dress to go outside, will be staying in sweatpants and a comfy sweater the whole time…Stay safe + dry!

I love all of those rooms, and the outdoor shower would be very handy for my surfer husband, and three little beach babes. Have been thinking of you – watched the update on Hurricane Sandy this morning. I hope she passes quickly with minimum damage. x

I would love a nice porch and high ceilings like that! The bedroom looks really peaceful though I wouldn’t want to need the nets for more than decoration. One thing I love about tropical homes is they all seem to have an atrium {Mexico and Central America at least}. I would love one of those. 🙂
I hope you still have power down there.

I am so worried for my east coast readers! This is on high alert to the pint where the NYSE and Nasdaq closed!!! My thoughts are with you!

Oh the tropics – I’m taken back to our honeymoon in Turks and Caicos I love a great beach and warm balmy weather… however, i don’t like the storms that often plague the region. And now the east coast, again? We are watching with baited breath & hoping for the best…Stay safe!

Really love the shady area under the balcony on the first photo, but bring that to Finland and you will have a cold wet place instead of that resort from hot sun.
Hope you are ok after Sandy.

The tropical must haves look wonderful, but right now I’m seeing images of that hurricane on CNN and it looks pretty scary! Hope it’s not as bad as it looks.

This post made me chuckle. I’m from the Bahamas but live in London, so I’m constantly missing aspects of home. But then whenever I’m home I’m bitching about heat and mosquitoes faster than you can say jimminy cricket lol

Thanks all for the well/safe wishes. The worst, I suppose, is behind us and now it’s time for the aftermath…
