Left to my own devices, I could easily have a similar situation to the one pictured above. Walls of nothing but magazines.ย Unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of such space.ย And now that I am trying to get the home office in gear, I really can no longer ignore the magazine overflow.
Currently I have a collection that lives in a large basket, there’s the set that live in magazine holders (which I completely forget exist) and then there’s the group that live in a pile next to the sofa (not cute).ย I would love to get rid of some but, whenever I sit down to weed them out, I find reasons not to let go: “…but this is a foreign/hard to get issue…” “..this is full of inspiration…”ย I figure, technically, I could argue that I need to keep them for work.
I do have an area right below a set of windows which might do. It is about 60″ wide and 16″ tall. So I may be able to do a few low storage bins on the floor.
The key is that I have to be able to see them and see the covers when flipping among them. If not, it is completely “out of sight, out of mind” for me.
What do you think of the options below? How do you deal with an overflow of magazines?
This basket solution would be the obvious choice for me as I already own baskets very similar to the one on the bottom right.
This option is pricier but, so elegant and modern- I’m in love.
With vintage milk crates, I would definitely be able to see the covers.

I like the milk crate idea best, or anything which allows you to glimpse at what’s inside without taking everything out. My only problem would be overcrowding! I’d need a lot of milk crates!

I only subscribe to a few magazines (Vanity Fair, Philadelphia, and the New Yorker) and once we read them, we tend to recycle them. Except for “special” issues, like the William + Kate wedding special VF, haha. I have a vintage-y looking wire basket from Home Decorators that I keep next to the sofa. You should check that site out, they have tons of baskets and neat storage options for cheap! Good luck wrangling your collection ๐

I toss all my magazines after I read them, but I still usually have about 10 sitting around to be read. Right now I’ve got them in a little wire basket that is really cutesy and not my style. I love that leather tote, too bad it is so expensive! There are some gray felt baskets at Target I kind of love too.

It sounds like the milk crate is a popular one. I have seen those baskets but had totally forgot about them- thanks for the reminder (will have to revisit that idea)

I subscribe to one magazine every year and I buy some issues I’m interested in at the bookshop. This year I subscribed to uppercase mag and I’ve been getting Kinfolk too ๐ Love that large shelf. So dreamy.

I toss mine too unfortunately, but I love that leather basket. I’m running out of room for book storage so we’re running into similar problems. YIKES I can’t throw them out either!

I would love that first room…wow. So beautiful! The amount of magazines we have at home is insane – so many subscriptions. Thanks for these options!

I toss too, but first I go through them with a craft knife and cut out all the pages that inspire me. I punch the pages and put them into a binder. I do not flip through the binder often, but it’s better to have that than to have million magazines. I do order only two magazines so the task is not overwhelming.
I also love the leather basket, I’ve seen similar ones made from felt if the price of leather freaks you out.
Leena says
Oh missed out that Heather allready mentioned the felt, sorry

I’ll tell you …… I keep entire magazines that I find I need to have around for quick inspiration etc. Otherwise, I tear out pages that I find inspiring or interesting, put them in a plastic page then it goes into my one of many “inspiration” binders. I line those up on my shelf in my office. It’s like opening a magazine without all of the ads and going straight to what I like to see or read. If I was that organized I could put the subjects in alphabetical order but that just seems like way too much effort. You have to set aside some time to collect the magazines and go through them but for me it’s well worth it. As for the whole magazines that I keep, that is when you can indulge in really cool containers, then you don’t have to spend a lot when choosing the ones you like best because you don’t have a ton of magazines to store.

sadly my magazines decorate the recycling bin at my condo complex ๐ I have to periodically toss them because I subscribe to 10 different magazines which piles up fast.

Mine are just on a boring shelf. And now I want a milk crate! ๐

@Leena + @Tracey …binders may just be the way to go then. Thanks!

I have piles too – and weeding through them is on my to-so list. I donate them to my local high school Interior Design class where they put them to good use – I know, I just retired as the teacher! I have also enjoyed flipping through the pages of magazines that I don’t subscribe to while on the Precore. When you are ready to toss research a good home for them.

I have quite a few neat piles of magazines throughout the house. Some on my desk, some on the bottom shelf of a side table, more stacked up on a bookshelf… and hubby has a growing pile of surfing and mountain biking mags next to our bed. I know how you feel, it’s so hard to part with them. I love the baskets, and I’m looking for a nice rustic box for Mark’s collection. x
Ada (new york) says
On my bookshelf I actually have more mags than books! I luv the white clean lines of magazine’s edges. There was a time that I had MORE mags than I could ready, so I started to schedule ‘time’ to read them .. 1/2 hour here and there and I was able to catch up and design mags are very inspirations .. bring me peace of mind and get’s my creative juices running ๐

I have way to many magazines to display them in a pretty way although I have already thrown out a lot of them. Store most of them in these magazine files from IKEA. I would need all the shelf space from the first image to store all of my magazines ๐ Love the leather tote, that would look nice next to our sofa and hold all the current reads.

We are in love with the vintage milk crate ๐ Great idea!
