Last week we took a look at the basics of succulents. Today we’re looking at the dirty (potting) and the pretty (planter options).
The Dirty
If you like gardening, part of the fun for you is probably the “hands in the dirt” part. This always makes me nervous though, when it comes to house plants because I always think “..what if I get this wrong and this plant becomes miserable…” (and the side effect of a ‘miserable’ plant is usually death)
But I digress. Here are a few pointers for planting succulents.
repotting: It is best to repot succulents during warmer months.Make sure the soil is dry. Remove from container and do away with any dead/rotted roots. Then, as with most plants, add soil (about 3/4 of the way of container), add plant and additional soil to make plant more stable.
soil: Succulent roots tend to be shallow. Thus, fast drying mixes work best. (ideal pH at around 6.0)
The Pretty
There are so many creative ways to pot a succulent. Here are just a few…

Since succulents require little water, have shallow roots and grow slowly, they lend themselves quite well to a vertical garden. See Better Homes & Gardens for a step by step of the diy project pictured here.

If you don’t have a bit to drill a small hole in your cup, use small stones beneath the soil for drainage.

This is perhaps the most original of the planter options and works really well with smaller plants. See The Lavender Blog for details and instructions.

I really like succulents, especially the top ones, but it’s a good thing I don’t have any yet. I thought they didn’t need dirt to grow. That could have been bad…

Love the framed succulents, and I’ve been wanting to do something similar but I still haven’t figured out how to water them (they do need some water after all)

This project suggests dismounting, and laying the frame flat to water. I might also suggest misting it with a spray bottle.
