A plant that “thrives on neglect”? Sounds like my kind of plant. Succulents come in a plethora of shapes, colors and sizes. They’ve always struck me as a ‘modern’ plant because of their highly defined thick leafs. Here is some basic information if you are looking to bring some of these beauties home.
Light
- Succulents prefer bright light, but be careful not to overexpose. Near a south facing window would be the best placement.
Temperature
- Because they are often found in the desert, they deal well with extremes. Temperatures can be as low as 40 in the evenings or as high 85 in the day.
Watering
- Succulents retain water either in the leaf, stem or root. This retention is what gives them their swollen look.
- They require generous watering during the Summer (but do let the soil dry in between). During the Winter months, they go dormant. Watering can be cut back to as little as monthly or even once every other month.
So, go ahead and give succulents a try. Once you find the right home for it, the toughest decision should simply be which one to choose from.

It’s funny because my aunt just gave me a succulent plant that I know I have in the window in my kitchen. This is my kind of plant as well, low maintenance.

I really need all the advice I can get when it comes to plants. They remain a mystery to me as I just can’t seem to keep them alive! Succulents may just be the answer for me (you had me at ‘low maintenance’).

Low maintenance plants work for me – unfortunately I haven’t got very green fingers. Some succulents have such beautiful structure, like a piece of art! xxx

Heh, I’m bad with succulents and cacti. I can keep any plant alive except those. I over water and tend them too much. I killed two cacti from my terrarium by over watering, but I love the looks of cacti, so I’m learning.

These looks soo pretty. The West Elm showroom I went to recently near Columbus Circle has tons of them .. they also have some plant aquariums that they prepped themselves and are selling them – kinda cool!
