During last week’s Flower Power, Shelly of The Strawberry Patch, wrote about how she would love to have plants in her living and dining rooms. But, she hasn’t been able to because of low lighting. So, for Shelly and those of us with less than favourable lighting conditions, here is a list of plants that do well in low lighting and still bring in a bit of colour.
1. African Violet {saintpaulia} Also great for air purification
2. Bromeliad {Bromeliaceae} Read: tough to kill!
3. Peace Lily {Spathiphyllum} Also great for air purification
4. Holiday Cacti {schlumbergera} Can also be found with blooms of red & white
5. Phal Orchid {Phalaenopsis} Saving the best for last!
other considerations
If your situation is not low lighting, but rather NO lighting, opt for artificial lighting. Fluorescent lights may do nothing for your complexion, but the red and blue tones work wonder for plants.
If you would like to keep any of these in a space that IS bright, just place the plant a few feet away from the direct light source.

This is such a useful list! We have very little lighting in our house so I will definitely be getting some of those! I had no idea that orchids could survive in low light!

Thank you so much for the list…and the mention! I’m going shopping for that holiday cacti! I had no idea those would do alright in low light, I always think of succulents needing loads of sun. I’ve never heard anyone call it holiday cacti, my mom calls it Christmas cacti and I’ve heard Easter cacti. I much prefer holiday, it’s the politically correct cacti! ha! 😉

Love this post! I have a large and varied collection of plants and flowers in my home and consider them one of my favorite design accessories 🙂
I absolutely love orchids but find them a bit finicky if given too much attention 🙂 But after reading your post I’m actually wondering if the problem is that they are getting a little too much light…hmmm.
Have a great weekend!

I love this post! The holiday cacti is so beautiful, I will keep those in mind when I need more new plants. My home don’t get a lot of direct lighting as well.
Orchids are one of my favorite flowers. They are very tough and they don’t need much watering. By the way, your orchids in the final picture is very pretty!
Hope you had a wonderful weekend!
